Angelyn Wong relishes transforming small spaces into welcoming homes

Angelyn Wong graduated from college with a growing interest in interior design. She joined Rezt+Relax right after graduation with no experience and requested for training. Under the guidance of one of the company’s creative leads, she spent a year learning the ropes of interior design. Twelve years later, she is a senior designer who’s still passionate about her work.

Angelyn is adept at creating interior designs that are particularly suited for smaller units, a common dwelling in cities with dense populations. This poses a unique challenge in terms of finding the right balance between space utilisation and a holistic living space. “Our clients tend to require abundant storage, which limits the available floor space in the apartment. I have to be creative in how I visualise the space to make it look bigger,” she remarks.

One of her more memorable projects was a Gramercy Park second home for a client living overseas. “He wanted a space that felt like a hotel, with gold accents throughout the unit. It was a short conversation but the end result was stunning and had all the features his family wanted.” Although there was no need for major renovation to the bathrooms and kitchen, Angelyn worked her magic with built-in storage around the kitchen and a bar with high chairs that created a casual dining area.

The living area was outfitted with warm lighting panels that enhanced its bright natural lighting and bronzed mirrors to make it look roomier. To keep the apartment from looking bland, Angelyn used different textures and hues to differentiate between the different spaces. Consistency was still key, however, with a cohesive colour palette throughout.

Her talent shines the most in the bedrooms, where darker and muted shades set the calming and relaxed mood. To create a seamless and continuous feel, she applied the same texture on the walls and beams and also furnished the room with Roman blinds in matching tones.

At Rezt+Relax, Angelyn demonstrates that a simple brief such as “hotel-like space with gold accents” can inspire her to develop a luxurious suite with ample space for family and guests without sacrificing the classic design aesthetic.
